Advertising Corusework Part 1 (reuploaded)

Advertisement appeal for Chanel “Coco Mademoiselle.”On one print advert, the model is standing against a wall with the lid of the perfume bottle on her lips. This makes her look more feminine and a bit seductive. Her face is to the side and is bent down with her eyes looking up. It makes her seem sexier because it looks like she is calling someone to come to her. On the other print advert, the model is sitting down. She is leaning towards the camera, and has a finger on her lips. This links to the first advert, where she has the bottle lid on her lips. This picture is less close-up than the first, and you can see her whole body, whereas on the other one, it was a head-shot.

I think the adverts were set in Paris because the perfume is from Paris and the background and actors look Parisian. Also the origin of the perfume is from Paris. The locations of the advert are in an apartment or studio. It is also set in a sort of museum. The one in the apartment is used because she is trying to seduce the photographer, so it is ideal to have it in an apartment. The other one is because she is getting ready for a show, and there are a lot of mirrors, showing that she’s beautiful. Everyone is looking at her when she wears the perfume. The storyline of the advertisement is that any women that wear this perfume will be able to seduce any man that they want.

There are a lot of props being used such as a hat and shirt, which she later takes off. There are also a lot of mirrors to show her reflection and expressions at different angles. There is also a sort of wall that shows moving images of her from different shots, angles and sizes. Some are bigger than others; this could be because they wanted to show her expressions. They also used a lot of bright lighting.

The colours used were various tones of cream and peach. This matches with the perfume bottle. They also used black and white, probably to show the sophistication and elegance that the perfume is meant to represent. In the video advert, there are mainly colours of red, black and silver. This again gives a hint of sophistication that is portrayed in the adverts.

There were various camera shots used. In the first print advert, the camera shot used was close-up head shot and the camera angle is at eye-level. In the second print advert, the camera shot used was midshot, and the camera angle is also eye-level, but to the side.

The target audience for this perfume is women aged 25-40. They are working class women, with a busy lifestyle, in a relationship, married or single but have children from their previous marriage, most likely looking to settle down. They get high income with a good job, although they might not like their jobs. They are most likely to work in an office environment. They fall under C1 in the Social Grade of Chief Income Earner. They are most likely to shop in high street shops such as Selfridges, House of Fraser and more like that. They would probably go to quite expensive restaurants and exotic holidays. They would probably watch romantic films, and read women’s lifestyle magazines. They would probably not eat much and be on lots of different diets.

The target audience of this advert would probably be described as a YUPPIE because they aren’t that old but they aren’t that young and they are also working in an urban profession that pays well. According to Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of needs this advert is aimed at someone who wants attention and friendship, someone who is a succeeder because they have achieved control and want to stay in control and have power of their own life and other people’s life’s.

The advert appeals used in this advert is testimonial because the model is Keira Knightly. They have also used glittering generalities because they are trying to say that if you use this product then you will be able to get whatever man you want and men will be like putty in your hands.

The role of the woman in this advert is a successful model that has done well in her job. The woman is in control over the man because she is playing with the man and leading him on. You can tell this because she pretends to like him and id about to kiss him but then decides not to, but leaves him a little memento to remember her and the man realises that he felt attracted to her because of the perfume, not her looks. This might also be a way of saying that women can only get men because of their smell.

Goffman’s theory fits into the adverts because the woman is revealing and has to use parts of her body to represent the perfume when she doesn’t really have to. She can just as easily represent the perfume with clothes on and without using other parts of her body and revealing herself. However, the other ideas of Goffman’s theory don’t fit in with the advert because the female has more authority and dominance over the male. And also according to Goffman’s theory, men normally have the voice-over authority rather than the men, however in this advert campaign, the female does.    

Horror movie evaluation

INTRODUCTION

I had a lot of different roles in the production process. For example, I was director, acting, producer, script writer, camerawoman, editor. In lesson I had researched about horror movie conventions, at horror movie history, typical camera angles used in horror movies. We learnt about diegetic and non-diegetic sounds in movies. We also learnt about the narrative in a movie which is really important because without it, you can’t really film anything as that’s where the ideas come from.

MAIN BIT
I know that there are 3 types of horror genres; slasher, supernatural and monster. We decided to do a slasher horror movie. In slasher movies the typical characters found are serial killers, psychos, young teenagers. The general storyline of a slasher movie is that the victim is normally possessed by the monster or killer and has normally done something bad so needs to be punished/got rid of. Some iconic objects in a slasher movie are knifes, swords, saws, black clothing, cold, harsh weather and a lot of blood. The conventions we decided to keep were the teenagers, serial killers, knife and blood, the cold weather setting, and the theme  that the victim needs to be punished so is murdered. We took inspiration from various horror scenes and we were influenced by different films.
I helped in designing and planning the film by noting the ideas we had for the storyline and giving feedback on it. I also made notes of the various settings we could use and props and costumes needed. The filming went well and we were able to get to grips with the camera and directing quite quickly. We filmed the scenes in order of the storyline so we knew what parts we had done and needed to do. One thing that was a problem was that we weren’t sure how to start the filming so we wasted some time at the beginning getting started. We also realised that we couldn’t film the scenes exactly as we had imagined and had to make do with what we were able to film. We also got rid of some scenes and changed the storyline as well as we weren’t happy with the old one and had thought of a better storyline. Some problems we faced in filming was that the area wasn’t available or that people were there and the filming was disrupted. This was frustrating as we had to film another scene instead and it wasted even more time and also because we had to refilm the whole thing again as we forgot.
While editing we faced various problems. One problem was that there weren’t enough MacBook’s available and we missed a lesson of editing because of this. Another problem is that once we got the MacBook, we found it difficult to edit as it was our first time using the software and we had to get to know it better. Also, importing the videos took long and this meant time was lost in editing. However we used this time to work on our evaluations instead. One other problem we faced was that in the process of importing the videos from the computer to the MacBook, we lost some scenes. This meant that we had to change it around a bit as the scene wasn't there. This was kind of annoying as we were sure on how the trailer would go but after losing the clip, we had to look for a different clip, which took some time and we didn't agree on what scene to use.
We didn't use any soundtracks as we felt it wasn't needed and would ruin the film. Also we added sound clips such as footsteps and heartbeats and there was a bit of us speaking included as well. Also we recorded ourselves whispering 'dark secrets' and added that around the same place as the title comes up.


CONCLUSION
Our film is called ‘’Dark Secrets’’ and is about a group of 4 friends who did something bad and have to hide it. However one of the girls (Fardowsa) can’t hack keeping quiet so decided to tell someone. Her best friend (Me) didn't want her to tell as she would get in trouble with the other 2 girls (Fatha and Hamdi) so told them to stop her. However in the process she got murdered by Fatha and Hamdi. I tried stopping them but failed. It ends with us 3 having an argument about the body and the other thing they did but doesn't show the decision they made. Our story ends on a cliff-hanger as this will be more interesting and urge people to watch the 2^nd one.
I think our group did better than we gave ourselves credit to. We thought it wouldn’t be good and that we might not be able to finish off editing or filming the scenes well. However we got a lot of good clips along with editing the whole thing well. My favourite part of the trailer was at the end where Fardowsa was being dragged on the floor as that wasn’t meant to happen when we were filming it, yet it still came out well and looked better than the scene that we did film and were going to use.
I don’t think we tried breaking any horror conventions or genres, however we did break one whilst filming but we didn’t put that in. The convention was the part where Hamdi and Fatha met; they were all buddy-buddy and were acting happy and friendly when they should’ve been meaner and scared. The social group in our film was teenage girls who were close friends. We represented them as a unity, like girls would normally be and made sure they did everything together and there was always the one girl who goes behind their back/betrays them. The killer was represented in the generic way with the face covered and scary and creeping up on the victim. 
The target audience for our film was 15-22 year olds. This is young teenagers like watching horror movies as it is the general thing to do at that age and because the storyline of the movie fits with their age range. Also because at age 22 they are getting older and transitioning from a teenager to an adult, as it takes a while to get rid of their childish habits so they would watch a movie like this. I think we did reach the target audience a little bit but maybe only a few of 22 year olds would watch it and more 16-17 years would watch it instead.
I think the main lessons I will take away from this project would probably be to be patient as good things come in little packages and that the final product won't always be the same  as you expected but sometimes much better.

Storyline (real one)

Our film is called 'Dark Secrets' and is about a group of 4 friends who have a big secret. The secret is that one of the girls accidently killed someone and the other 3 girls helped cover up. They decide to hide it instead of handing themselves in. However, the guilt of what happened gets to one of the girls (Fardowsa) and she decides to tell someone. Before she can tell someone though, one of the other girls (Me) finds out. Not wanting to get arrested and being hated by the other 2 girls, she tries talking her out of it. Failing, she goes and tells the other 2 girls (Hamdi and Fatha) about it, thinking that they will be able to talk her out of it as she couldn't. However, when they confront her, Hamdi loses her rage and attacks Fardowsa, this time killing her on purpose. I walk in on them deciding what to do with the body and run fearing for my life but they catch up to me. Scared and realising that if I tell someone then I would en dup in the same position as Fardowsa I decide to keep quiet and help them with the body. The movie ends with them arguing with the past weeks event but doesn't show what the final decision was.
The reason why we decided on a cliff hanger was because we thought it'd be more interesting and people would want to watch the 2nd one. We also kind of left it like that as we weren't sure how to end it ourselves and when people watch it they'd be intrigued about it and wonder what was happening, meaning they'd want to go and watch the movie in the cinemas.

Storyline (draft one/old one)

There is a girl who is pretty but dumb. She has friends who use her for her popularity and her beauty. One evening they are revising in the library when the girl decides to go to the toilet. She is washing her hands and when she looks up into the mirror she sees that it has writing on it. She gets scared so she decides to look in all the cubicles to see if there’s anyone there. The doors start acting spooky and opening up when there’s no one there. She then looks into the other classrooms and sees that there’s no one there either.  She goes off to find her friends. Getting frightened she starts running down the stairs and can hear footsteps so goes even faster. She stops to see if she can hear the footsteps but can’t so walks slowly. But she starts hearing the footsteps again so starts running off again. When she gets to the library she sees that her friends are gone but left her a note telling her to meet up in their usual spot. When she gets there they aren’t there either so she starts panicking. Suddenly something comes up behind her and the next thing you see she is on the floor dead. The screen then goes blank and then the scene goes back to the mirrors in the toilet with the words ‘choose your friends wisely.’ Then the credits roll

Props and Costumes

• The props and costumes we will use are school uniform, reading books, mirrors, black clothing, knife, mask, fake blood and scary costume preferably from the drama department.
• We need school uniform as most of the scenes are set in the school and the characters are school girls. Also because we will be filming a lot during lesson time, it is sensible to just wear our school uniforms.
• We will need the knife as the murder weapon and the mask and black/scary costume for the killer.
• The fake blood is for after the victim gets killed as we need the blood to show that she has died.
• The mirrors are for the warning message that is written on there.

 

 

Settings for our horror movie

The stairs that we use to go upstairs in the west blocks. This is because you can manipulate the camera work and make it seem creepy and a bad place. We could zoom p to the character and film the stairs making it look endless. We could also film outside the windows when it is dark as there is nothing outside of it other than building and the work that the builders are doing. This is a good convention as stairs can be seen as a place of fear because sometimes, if you’re on your own, you’re just stuck with your thoughts and you’re own thoughts can creep you out. We could have a scene where the character is going up the stairs and they think someone is there so get scared. We can also have someone sneak up on them and scare them, either another character or the creature.

We could use the corridors in the temporary buildings as it is a bit like a maze. This can be used in a chase scene.

Mirrors in the toilets as you can use them for manipulation with double images/meanings. Also because you can play around with the camera angles and change them around. Another reason why we chose the mirrors is because it is an iconic objects that appear in almost all horror movies.

Doors because it gives a sense of curiosity, as you can be looking at the door and wondering what might be coming in. also some doors are creaky so if it is quiet and you hear a noise you will get scared. Also there are gaps between doors when you open them so anything can come in, and ghosts have shadows so they can go through it

Drama theatre /studio. Because they’re dark so we can use them to our advantage. Also behind the benches there is a lot of dark spaces so we can use that to add a sense of fear. The whole theatre is dark as well so we can use that as an effect rather than a location.

Lifts as they are the most scariest elements of a horror movie. The smallness or the largeness of the space can be used to add to the scary effect. We can also use the gap in between the floor and the lift. We can also use the gap in between the door where all the wires are as it is creepy and a lot of dark spaces.

The library because it is a quiet place and we can use the quietness as scary because some people are scared of loneliness and as it is quiet in there, we can make noises and use special effects so that the place looks scary.
